Volume 14 – Friday 19th December 2025

Dear Parents/Carers

Season’s greetings! I hope this message finds you well and in good spirits as we approach the festive season. I can hardly believe we have reached the final Head’s Herald edition of 2025 — what an extraordinary term it has been! As we prepare to enjoy the holidays, it’s important to pause and celebrate everything we have achieved together this year.

We are incredibly fortunate to have such amazing young people in our school. They work tirelessly alongside us to uphold our high expectations, high aspirations, and high standards every single day. Even those who occasionally make the wrong choices engage with us positively, allowing us to guide them toward resolution and a clear pathway forward.

A heartfelt thank you — and I know you share this sentiment — goes to all the staff who go above and beyond for your children. The dedication, care, and genuine love they pour into ensuring every child feels safe, supported, and valued is truly remarkable. Their efforts often go unseen, but they make a profound difference every day.

Of course, we are not perfect. We strive each day to do the right thing, and when we make mistakes, we learn from them. It is through acknowledging our strengths and reflecting on areas for improvement that we continue to grow — both professionally and personally.

I also want to acknowledge that Christmas can be a challenging time for some families for a variety of reasons. If you or your child need support, please remember that help is available. We are here to listen, guide, and provide the support needed to ensure everyone feels safe, cared for, and valued during this season.

As we look ahead to the new year, a reminder that if your child would like to wear a skirt from January, 70+ denier black tights must be worn every day. I really do appreciate your support in ensuring all our young people look smart and presentable for school.

At this special time of year, I feel incredibly blessed and grateful to be part of such a wonderful school community. The warmth, support, and shared commitment of our students, staff, and families is something I never take for granted.

May the peace and joy of our Lord Jesus Christ fill your hearts this Christmas. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” — Isaiah 9:6

As we celebrate the festive season, may your holidays be filled with faith, hope, love, and cherished moments with family and friends. Thank you for being an integral part of our Boteler Family journey in 2025 — I am excited for all that we will achieve together in the new year!

Year 11 Mock Results

Year 11 students will have their Mock Exam Results Assembly during Period 5 on Monday 5th January, where students will receive an envelope containing their Mock Results. The purpose of the assembly is for students to experience the feeling on the real GCSE results day in August. Results will also be emailed to parents/carers immediately after the assembly.

Year 11 Period 6

Starting on Tuesday 13th January we will be extending the school day for our Year 11 students as we did last year with a Period 6 lesson. On a Tuesday to Thursday there will be a day dedicated to a ‘Subject area’ where the students will attend a study session for the dedicated subject. At the end of Period 5 the students will be brought to the canteen for refreshments before they start work again. The session will run from 15.15-16.00 Tuesday – Thursday. The Period 6 lessons will run on a two-week timetable (below) in the same way as our normal school timetable operates. The first session starts on Tuesday 13th January and will run up until the GCSE exams start. The first session is Week 1 Tuesday Option A.

Period 6 sessions provide an extra hour each fortnight (weekly for Maths), which increases curriculum teaching time by 20% for Option subjects. This extra time will have a direct impact on improving the grades students achieve in the summer. Students followed the same plan in previous years and the impact was significant.

KS3 WA1 Internal Assessments: 5th -16th January 2026

Students will be sitting their first Working At (WA) assessment of this academic year in all of their subjects during assessment fortnight (Monday 5th January – Friday 16th January 2026). This may take the form of a test or an assessed piece of writing/practical piece of work.

Students will be provided with revision lists giving details of the topics and content that will be tested. We are also encouraging students to take their workbooks home to revise. It is important that students look after their workbooks and check they have the correct books that are needed for the following day when packing their bags for school each evening. The expectation is that students spend time each evening preparing for the assessments. Constant revision and practice is the surest way to fully embed skills and knowledge required to secure excellent achievement at KS4.

All tests will be classroom based and undertaken under exam conditions. It is important that students are used to working in this environment so they are fully prepared for their examinations in Year 11. Students are expected to be fully prepared for all assessments with the correct equipment which includes:

  • Pen
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Eraser
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Pencil case
  • Scientific calculator

Assessment Timetable

We ask parents to spend time reviewing the attached assessment timetable with their child. This year, the timetable shows the exact day and lesson period for each assessment for all subjects, helping students to plan their preparation more effectively. Please note that Design and Technology will not appear on the timetable, as students follow a carousel model and complete their assessments at the end of each term. PE is also not included because students are assessed more frequently—twice each half term. Students will receive a hard copy of their personalised timetable during morning registration, where they will be given time to highlight when each assessment takes place, supported by their form tutors. It is important that students know exactly when each assessment is scheduled so they can prepare appropriately and feel confident in the weeks ahead.

Please click the link below to view the timetables for Year 7, 8 and 9.

KS3 WA1 Assessments

Students’ assessment scores and progress judgements will be included in the WA Assessment Report, which will be emailed to all parents on Friday 6th February.

If you have any concerns or questions about any matters related to how your child’s progress is tracked and reported, please don’t hesitate to contact Mr Koltan by email jkoltan@boteler.org.uk or your child’s Class Teacher.

Punctuality Matters

One of our core expectations as a school community is that students arrive on time, ready to learn. Good punctuality is not simply about being present; it is about developing positive habits, showing respect for learning and ensuring every student begins the day calmly and prepared.

Over recent weeks, we have seen an increase in the number of students arriving late to school, with traffic-related issues frequently cited as the reason. We recognise that congestion at key points such as Bridgefoot Roundabout, the Swing Bridge, and Manchester Road can cause delays, particularly during peak hours. However, these traffic patterns are well established and, unfortunately, are unlikely to change in the near future.

For this reason, it is essential that traffic concerns are built into morning routines. Families and students should plan ahead by allowing extra time for journeys, setting off earlier, and anticipating possible delays. Doing so will help ensure that students arrive at school by 08.20, in line with our expectations.

Arriving on time allows students to:

  • Start the day positively and without unnecessary stress
  • Be fully present for tutor time and key messages
  • Avoid disruption to learning for themselves and others
  • Develop important life skills such as responsibility, organisation, and self-discipline

We ask for your continued support in reinforcing the importance of punctuality at home. Working together, we can ensure that all students are in school, on time, and ready to make the most of every learning opportunity.

Thank you for your cooperation and ongoing commitment to high standards.

New Year, same High Standards

As we approach the New Year, we would like to take the opportunity to reflect, reset, and refocus. January represents a fresh start and a chance for everyone to reset the bar, push for even higher standards and challenge themselves to be the very best they can possibly be.

Our expectations remain high because we know what our students are capable of achieving. High standards around uniform, equipment, punctuality, and readiness to learn are not about rules for the sake of rules, they are about creating the right conditions for success, confidence and pride in our school community.

To ensure we hit the ground running in January, we ask for parental support in checking the following over the holiday period:

  • Shoes that have been outgrown or broken are replaced
  • All required equipment replaced if missing (maybe added to the Christmas list!)
  • Phone pouches are in good working order, with replacements ordered if needed
  • Uniform is complete and meets school expectations (not forgetting the message regarding tights for those wearing skirts)

These small checks make a big difference. Starting the term organised and prepared helps students settle quickly, focus on learning, and aim high from day one.

We would also like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to parents and carers. The vast majority of students consistently meet these expectations, and your ongoing support plays a vital role in this. It does not go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated.

Let’s work together to make the New Year a strong one, full of ambition, pride, and high standards. A fresh start, a reset of the bar and a shared commitment to being the best we can be.

Bike Helmets for Christmas

As a school, we love seeing students choosing active, healthy ways to travel to and from school – and cycling is a fantastic option. However, there’s one small but very important detail we’re still not seeing enough of… bike helmets.

Despite previous reminders, many students are still cycling without helmets. While we sincerely hope everyone arrives safely every day, the reality is that accidents can and do happen, often when we least expect them. A helmet isn’t just an accessory; it can quite literally be the difference between a knock and something far more serious. In many cases, it can save a life.

With Christmas approaching, we know what often appears under the tree… shiny new bikes. And while Father Christmas is very generous, we’re sure he wouldn’t mind popping a helmet into the sack as well. After all, what’s better than a new bike? A new bike and the protection to enjoy it safely.

So, our festive challenge is simple:

  • If you cycle, wear a helmet – every ride, every time
  • If cycling in the dark, make sure you have lights on the front and rear of your bikes
  • Parents and carers, please help reinforce this habit
  • Students, look after yourselves and each other

Christingle Service

Our Christingle service, held on Tuesday evening at St Elphin’s Church, was a magical occasion. Students from our school, alongside children from local primary schools, performed beautifully and gave poignant readings. Their festive contributions were a wonderful reminder of the spirit of Christmas and the importance of coming together. It was a special evening of celebration and community, and a memorable experience for all who attended.

Christmas Fayre

On Monday, the school hall was full with Christmas cheer for the annual Student Christmas Fayre. A wide variety of stalls filled the hall, including Council and House stalls, offering games, gifts, cards, plants, raffles, refreshments and delicious home-baked Christmas cookies. Many students took the opportunity to do their Christmas shopping — and with great success!

Student performances on the stage added to the festive atmosphere, and the Fayre was made even more special by a visit from Father Christmas himself.

Huge thanks go to the Parents Supporting Boteler PTA Group for their incredible support in making the event such a success. Thanks to the generosity of our school community, hundreds of pounds were raised for the school. A brilliant event all round — well done and thank you to everyone involved!

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Exciting Updates for in our English as an Additional Language (EAL) Department

We are delighted to share some fantastic developments in our English as an Additional Language (EAL) provision. To ensure every learner feels supported and confident, we have introduced new tools and resources that will make a real difference in the classroom.

  • iPads for Translation Support
We have invested in iPads to help students access translations during lessons. These devices will assist with translating teachers’ speech, worksheets, and even content displayed on the board, making learning more accessible and inclusive.
  • FlashAcademy Subscription
We are now subscribed to FlashAcademy, an innovative online platform designed to assess and support English language acquisition. This tool will help us track progress and tailor interventions during form time, ensuring students receive the right support at the right time.

These changes reflect our commitment to providing high-quality support for all learners and fostering an environment where every student can thrive.

If you would like to discuss how these provisions could support your child, please don’t hesitate to contact the EAL Lead Mrs J Jones at jjones@boteler.org.uk.

The final lanterns were manufactured using plywood and acrylic.

Physical Education

Please Label School Uniform and PE Kit

Over the past few weeks, we’ve noticed an increase in school uniform and PE kit going missing or being accidentally swapped. With so many students wearing similar items every day, it can be very difficult to tell belongings apart — especially jumpers, cardigans, PE tops and coats.

We would like to remind families that we have been asking for all uniform and PE kit to be clearly labelled since September, and we are now nearly a full term into the school year. Unfortunately, unlabelled items make it very difficult to return lost clothing to the correct student.

To help reduce lost property and avoid mix-ups, we kindly ask all families to check that every item of school uniform and PE kit is labelled with the student’s name. Labels allow staff and students to return items to their rightful owner quickly and easily.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us look after everyone’s belongings and keep school running smoothly.

Academy Sport+ Athletes Explore Elite Sport Science at Liverpool John Moores University

Our Academy Sport+ athletes recently took part in an inspiring and hands-on visit to the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Science at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) – one of the world’s leading institutions for sport science research.

Throughout the day, students were fully immersed in both theoretical and practical sessions, gaining first-hand experience of how science underpins elite sporting performance. A key focus of the visit was biomechanics, where students explored how movement efficiency, force, and technique can significantly impact athletic success.

In the laboratories, students completed a range of fitness testing protocols, with their results profiled and compared against data from a professional boxer. This gave students a fascinating insight into the physical demands of elite sport and allowed them to benchmark their own strengths and areas for development against a professional athlete.

One of the highlights of the visit was an engaging lecture delivered by Professor Bill Baltzopoulos, titled “Why Usain Bolt Runs So Fast.” Students learned how stride length, force production, and biomechanics combine to create the fastest sprinter in history, bringing classroom theory to life through real-world examples.

The experience culminated in the biomechanics suite, where students carried out their own movement analysis, using specialist equipment to assess technique and performance. This practical application reinforced their understanding of biomechanics and showcased how sport science is used in talent development, injury prevention, and performance enhancement.

The visit was an outstanding opportunity for our Academy Sport+ athletes to deepen their knowledge, experience university-level study, and gain inspiration for future careers in sport, science, and performance. A truly motivating day that highlighted the power of learning beyond the classroom. Thank you to our students, who were impeccably behaved.
