Beauty and the Beast

The Gospel According to Disney – Beauty & the Beast

Beauty and the Beast is a wonderful tale of how love conquers everything. A handsome arrogant Prince is cruel to a witch, who turns him into a beast until one should come along who can see past his ugliness and love the person within. That person is a beautiful girl called Belle, the only daughter of her father. Belle turns the life of this Prince upside down and gives him a hope that he never had before. After some twists and turns in the story, they fall in love and as they kiss he is transformed back into the Prince, but now his character has been transformed – he is no longer arrogant and heartless.

Last time I mentioned that the bible speaks of humanity being in exile, out of relationship with God because of sin. In other words we are under a curse. It was for this reason that Jesus came, for God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son that he might lift the curse. Just as in the story of Beauty and the Beast, this can only happen as each person comes to love Jesus for himself or herself.

There is another twist in the story that is often overlooked, which is that all his servants are also caught up in the curse and they too are restored by Belle’s kiss. When we are unhappy it doesn’t just affect us, but all those around us. Similarly, when we are happy, our joy overflows into the lives of those around us. Knowing Jesus loves us, gives us a hope that has the power to transform all of our relationships.

Think of a time when you were the happiest you have ever been. Capture the moment, how you felt and the way your friends and family were around you. Where is that joy today? Jesus longs for you to be truly happy and to have that joy transform both your life and the lives of those around you. What is holding you back?
