Currently our Y11 students have the equivalent of 2.5 hours a week in lessons. Our Y10 and Y9 students currently have the equivalent of 2 hours per week.
At KS4 we develop students skills further through a variety of materials and themes techniques and processes including drawing and painting, print, textiles, relief, collage, 3D, photography, digital processes etc. We adapt schemes according to current exhibitions, new artists and ideas. We take the students to see various exhibitions and places of interest and bring in practicing artists to provide workshops to inspire the students and introduce new ideas.
We currently have a partnership with Priestley College and our students are able to access the expertise at the college through their sessions using digital media and also the Creative Workshops sessions developing Fine Art, Textiles, Graphic and 3D skills.
Art is a popular option choice at KS4 and we currently have three groups in Y11. We follow the AQA Fine Art Qualification, which consists of 60% coursework and 40% exam. The exam is made up of a preparatory period of around ten weeks and then a final piece developed over ten hours.
5 Ways to support your child
Ensure that homework is completed to a good standard; this requires time.
Gather together some art resources at home – shading pencils, colours , glue, scissors etc.
Encourage your child to practice the skills they learn in lessons. Drawing as much as possible develops skills and confidence.
Encourage your child to visit exhibitions and events. These will enable them to develop ideas and give them inspiration.
Attending art sessions after school is a great way to develop extra pieces and improve their coursework.

The Art Department provides assessment data in line with school policy. We will assess the students work using four assessment objectives outlined below.
- Developing ideas based on investigation and understanding. Researching and analysing artist’s work.
- Using resources, media, materials and techniques. Exploring and experimenting.
- Recording ideas and observations. Using appropriate media effectively.
- Improve and evaluate work. Consider the final presentation. Make an informed and meaningful response.
Asessment will be based on a body/ project/set of work as one piece will not cover all the assessment criteria.
