In the Warrington Guardian on 6th May 2010, a Grappenhall resident who commutes to work past the school wrote a scathing letter about the pupils and the school. It provoked a huge backlash from present and former pupils and other residents.
Below is a response from the headteacher.
Last week, a small group of pupils gave Sir Thomas Boteler CE High School a bad name by smoking on Knutsford Road; out of sight of the staff on duty, but in full view of the morning commuter traffic. I wish Fiona Simpson had phoned to tell me about it, instead of publicly criticising the school in this newspaper. Those pupils have now been disciplined, but the whole school community (staff, parents, and most of all, the pupils) are up in arms. They are upset that this tiny minority have let us down, but also that we have been misrepresented by Fiona’s comments about ‘sloppy standards’ at the school. Nothing could be further from the truth. Standards of achievement, attendance and behaviour have risen year on year, contributing to our position as one of Warrington’s most popular schools. Our ethos was described by Ofsted as ‘Outstanding’, a view echoed by anyone who visits us and has the pleasure of meeting our pupils. Standards of uniform in the school are excellent and I can assure Fiona that any ‘customisation’ disappears rapidly on entry to the site. Yes, of course there is the odd ‘bad apple’ and some children will make wrong choices, but our job is to help them see that and avoid making the same mistakes. Don’t believe the national press, who do their best to demonise the country’s youth. Week after week, the Warrington Guardian celebrates the wonderful achievements of the young people of our town, including those from Sir Thomas Boteler. You will have read about all the money they have raised for a variety of worthy causes. You will know about the Archbishop of York Youth Trust Award, received by the school for the voluntary community projects led by hundreds of pupils. Our musicians perform at major events across the country. We lead a renowned international Youth Leadership programme, and of course, last year Warrington’s ‘Young Citizen of the Year’ was from Boteler. It’s a shame Fiona felt she had to criticise a young girl because she brought a pink bag to school, without taking into account what an amazing person she might be.

Dear Parents, Carers and Pupils,
After an amazing week of weather, the school will reopen on Monday at the usual time. Many thanks to the site staff and helpers who have made this possible. In preparation for Monday, here are a few key points to bear in mind:
1. Ensure your child wears sensible clothing, especially footwear! Try to wear uniform, but make sure they're warm (coats, gloves, hats, scarves, sturdy footwear, etc.)
2. If you must bring them by car, drop off away from the school site to avoid congestion. Access to the Ball Hall car park is still quite dangerous.
3. For safety reasons, the pupils will be prohibited from playing outside at break and lunchtime.
We expect the school to run as near to normal as possible, but will keep you informed if things change. Please see the new ‘Emergency Closure Policy’ (click here to view) for additional guidance.

Dear Parents, Carers and Pupils,
We are working hard to ensure that the school will be able to reopen on Monday 11 January. I am very sorry for the disruption to children's education and the inconvenience this may cause parents. Although the transport situation has now improved, I have taken the decision to keep the school closed because the volume of snow and ice means the site remains dangerous for pupils, staff and visitors. Site staff are working to clear entrances and internal spaces and we are negotiating with Warrington Borough Council to bring in snow clearing equipment for the driveways and car parks. If pupils have access to the internet, they can continue their learning via the VLE. Teaching staff have posted detailed guidance for each year group on the home page.

Two Sir Thomas Boteler pupils recently appeared on the legendary BBC children's programme 'Blue Peter' as part of their dance group, 'IndepenDANCE'. IndepenDANCE are the National Street Cheer Champions and were invited to perform on the show. Laura Berry and Abbie Jarvis, both from Year 8, travelled to London to take part. Both are now very proud owners of their very own Blue Peter badge!

Kind-hearted pupils at Sir Thomas Boteler wore fancy dress to raise money for the BBC's Children in Need on Friday 20th November. Come back soon to find out the total amount raised!
UPDATE: They raised £410! Very well done! 23/11/2009

We were really excited and especially delighted to have been invited to perform at the National Specialist Schools Conference on 4th November.
The day began at 6.30am as we left Warrington by coach to the Conference which took place in Surrey at the Hilton, Cobham. We arrived at 11.00am and after a short rehearsal and lunch our pupils performed at 2.00pm. The audience consisted of teachers and Heads of Specialism from across the country. At the end of the performance (described by Billy Ashurst as ‘Brazilliant’), our pupils were given a standing ovation.
We were thrilled to have this opportunity to showcase our pupils’ talents and it was a huge honour to be invited in recognition of our young people’s hard work, commitment and excellence. We are very proud of our African Drumming Group and Samboteler who performed at the conference. 12/11/2009
A two-minuted silence decended upon the school at 11am on Wednesday 11th November to mark the 91st anniversary of Armistace Day.
Earlier that morning, a service was held in our school hall to remember those who have lost their lives in times of war, particularly those former pupils and staff from our school community. Members of he community attended as well as former staff and teachers. Also, we were thinking about our soldiers who are presently serving in Afghanistan. There were readings, poems and prayers and the service was officiated by the Rev. John Harries, the chaplain.
Representatives from the School Council, cadets, guides and scouts placed poppies, candles, and messages of peace as part of this annual service.

Musical maestros from a Latchford high school impressed the military’s top brass at an armed forces event.
Pupils from Sir Thomas Boteler CE High School, on Grammar School Road showed just why the school had been awarded specialist music school status with performances at an event held at the NorthWest Regional Development Agency headquarters at Centre park.

The musicians performed for current and former armed forces staff and were praised by visiting defence secretary Bob Ainsworth.
