Prayer Spaces – Praying together for our Year 11s

It’s good to pray. Jesus says, ‘ask and it will be given you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you’ (Matthew 7v7). Moses set up a tent of meeting where he would meet with the Lord on behalf of the people. At Sir Thomas Boteler Church of England

It’s good to pray. Jesus says, ‘ask and it will be given you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you’ (Matthew 7v7). Moses set up a tent of meeting where he would meet with the Lord on behalf of the people.

At Sir Thomas Boteler Church of England High School, we have set up our own tents of meeting, where we can gather together to pray for our year 11s as they prepare for their exams.

Great things happen when we join together in prayer! From Monday April 22nd through to Friday May 24th every pupil will visit our prayer space, which has been set up in our Peace Garden. There are five prayer stations, Hopes and Dreams, Casting cares on Jesus, Seeing through God’s eyes, Stained Glass prayers and Twitter prayers.

At each station pupils have the opportunity to reflect on the love of God and to pray for those taking exams and preparing to leave school. Year 11 students are invited to visit the stations before they begin their exams so that they may read the prayers being said on their behalf and spend time in prayer themselves to the Lord Jesus.

During the last weekend of the Easter holidays dedicated volunteer staff and pupils from Sir Thomas Boteler descended on Lancaster University to run the seventh HOBY UK Youth Leadership residential seminar.  Eighteen Sir Thomas Boteler pupils (more than every before!) combined with 42 others from schools around the North West and delegates from Ireland at the biggest HOBY UK event yet.  The event ran from Wednesday to Saturday and incorporated a mixture of ice breaking sessions, guest speakers, workshops, a talent show, a ’Question Time’, a disco and the returning Action Jackson.  Staff and pupils from Sir Thomas Boteler as well as other school such as Birchwood, Parklands and Great Sankey, gave up their holiday to the programme.  These pupils had already been through the programme and have now returned as Group Leaders, Group Leader Assistants and even working alongside staff on Media and Logistics.

All delegates had a life changing experience and despite some post HOBY blues are ready to take what they’ve learnt and throw themselves into volunteering for the many charities that gave presentations.

Congratulations to Jack

He joins a list of exceptional teachers who are the stars of education this year. The finalists will receive the results… when they are announced by the Pearson Teaching Awards on Thank a Teacher Day, 17 May 2013. They will then be cheered on by pupils, parents and colleagues at school presentations.

Celebrating twelve years of recognition for unsung heroes, the Teaching Awards will focus on finalists – headteachers, teachers, teaching assistants and school teams – from across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each of the winners will receive a Plato – the Teaching Awards trophy representing excellence in education. Distinctions and commendations will also be presented.

Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson, president of the Teaching Awards said: ‘I am genuinely proud and honoured to be the president of the Teaching Awards. I owe so much of what I’ve done to my fantastic teachers at school and university and it is exciting to join in celebrating what is probably the most important profession of them all.’

The Teaching Awards were founded by Lord Puttnam CBE to focus on inspired education professionals who make the positive achievements of pupils possible.

2013 is a record year for the Pearson Teaching Awards with over 24,000 nominations. Each and every nomination is a “thank you” to an education professional who has made a difference to the lives of children and young people.

Rod Bristow, President of Pearson UK said: ‘Supporting the Pearson Teaching Awards gives us a unique opportunity to champion exceptional teaching professionals across the UK. Pearson has long held lifelong learning to be at the heart of all its business. All young people deserve the very best chance to make progress in their lives through education.

‘That is why we believe it’s vital to recognise inspirational teachers, for their commitment to teaching and learning and improving the life chances of the next generation.’

Mixed Away Results Leave Basketball Qualification In The Balance

Before half term we played Congleton High School in our first away match of the season. Our team was familiar with the opposition’s strengths and had a game plan designed to stifle Congleton’s best two players. Strong rebounding and excellent man to man marking led to Congleton finding it hard to score, whilst our offence worked well and many baskets were scored from fast breaks.

The scores were fairly even at half time but as is often the case, Boteler pulled away in the second half and at one point the difference between the teams was well over 20 points. This allowed us to use all our players on the bench, giving them vital match experience. By the end of the match there was still a 15 point difference and every player scored at least one basket.

The team was advised and managed by Mr Wood, Mr Lloyd, Josh Woodward and Mrs McLean who all provided valuable support away from home. The final score of 74-59 reflected a comfortable victory, which kept us at the top of the pool with one match to play.

Our final pool match was against Birchwood, again an away fixture against familiar opposition. Our team was not at full strength and our players found this a difficult venue to play at once again, being used to the excellent facilities in the Ball Hall. Birchwood won this match by 55-50, the first time they have beaten us since our first meeting in Year 9.

We now await a decision by England Basketball to see if we will progress to the Regional Round of this year’s competition. In spite of this uncertainty, the team is in a confident mood ahead of this week’s Warrington Schools U16 Competition in the Ball Hall. This is a competition we have won three times in the past. Photographs recently posted on the school’s website show previous Boteler winners.

The players who have taken us to this level are; Renz Kae Agpoon, Jacob Lloyd, Nathan Weaver, Josh McLean, Cameron Burrows, Liam Hickson, Aaron Ashton and Matthew McCready.
